French Press Coffee Ratio and Brew Time Guide
By Coffee Ratio Calculator Guru · Updated January 2025 · 5 min read
The ideal French press ratio is 1:15 — 1 gram of coffee for every 15ml of water — brewed for 4 minutes. Use our French press calculator to get the exact coffee dose for any press size. French press is one of the most forgiving brew methods, but ratio and time still work together to determine your final cup quality.
Why 1:15 Works So Well for French Press
French press is a full-immersion brew method — grounds steep in water for the entire brew time, unlike pour over where water continuously drains. This makes it inherently more efficient at extraction than percolation methods, and the metal filter allows oils and fine particles into the cup that paper filters remove. These oils add body and richness, which means French press can use a slightly higher ratio (more water per gram of coffee) than pour over while still delivering a full-bodied cup. The 1:15 range (compared to 1:16 for pour over) reflects this efficiency difference.
Brew Time and Its Relationship to Ratio
Standard French press brew time is 4 minutes at 1:15. The relationship works like this: a stronger ratio (more coffee, less water) extracts slightly faster because there are more extraction sites per unit volume. A weaker ratio extracts slightly slower. In practice, the difference is only 30–60 seconds across the 1:12–1:17 range, so time adjustment is minor. More important is what happens after pressing: leaving coffee on the grounds continues extraction and rapidly increases bitterness. Decant all the coffee immediately after pressing — this single step has more impact than fine-tuning the ratio.
French Press Ratio and Brew Time Quick Reference
| Strength | Ratio | Brew Time | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild | 1:17 | 4:00 | Light body, clean, low intensity |
| Balanced | 1:15 | 4:00 | Full body, rich, classic French press |
| Strong | 1:13 | 4:00–4:30 | Bold, thick, intense |
| Very Bold | 1:12 | 4:00 | Very concentrated, almost espresso-like body |
- 1:15 is the standard balanced French press ratio; 1:12–1:13 for bold, 1:17 for mild.
- Brew time is 4 minutes regardless of strength — time adjustment is minor compared to ratio.
- Decant immediately after pressing — leaving coffee on grounds continues extraction and adds bitterness.
- Coarse grind is essential; fine grinds slip through the mesh and make the cup muddy.
