How Many Cups in a Bag of Coffee?

The number of cups per bag depends on three things: the weight of the bag, the size of each cup, and the coffee to water ratio you brew at. A standard 12 oz (340g) bag of coffee brewed at the SCA's 1:16 balanced ratio into 8 oz (237ml) cups yields approximately 28 cups. At a stronger 1:14 ratio, that drops to about 25 cups; at a milder 1:18 ratio, it rises to about 32.

The calculation is straightforward: multiply your cup size in ml by your ratio denominator to get the coffee per cup, then divide the bag weight by that amount. A 12 oz bag at 1:16 with 237ml cups: 237 ÷ 16 = 14.8g per cup, and 340g ÷ 14.8g = 23 cups. This coffee to water ratio calculator uses the same underlying logic for all 10 brew methods — the cups-per-bag tool applies it specifically to batch planning.

For espresso, the math changes significantly. A single shot uses only 7–9g of coffee, while a double uses 16–22g. A 340g bag of espresso beans yields approximately 38–48 double shots — far more servings than the same bag brewed as filter coffee, though smaller serving sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 12 oz (340g) bag of coffee brewed at a 1:16 ratio into 8 oz (237ml) cups yields approximately 24 cups. At a stronger 1:14 ratio, that's about 20 cups; at a milder 1:18, about 27. If you drink 2 cups per day, a 12 oz bag lasts roughly 10–14 days.

At 2 cups per day: a 12 oz bag lasts 10–14 days; a 1 lb bag lasts 14–18 days; a 2 lb bag lasts 4–5 weeks. This calculator shows exact days at 2 cups/day for any bag and strength setting. For freshness, most roasters recommend using coffee within 2–4 weeks of opening, so buy in the quantity you can use in that window.

Store whole beans in an airtight container at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Do not store coffee in the fridge — the fluctuating temperatures and moisture accelerate staling. Grind only what you need immediately before brewing. Whole beans stay fresh for 2–4 weeks after opening; pre-ground coffee stales much faster, typically within 1–2 weeks.
